Neither much horror, nor much sci-fi. Not THAT bad, but not a MUST watch - unless you have a passion for 1930s films of any sort and have to see whatever is available on the IA. Ralph Morgan (Dr. Paul Kristan) as the most decent and kindly man in town and Mischa Auer (Zan, the Hunchback), his loving, faithful servant, give decent performances. Maxine Doyle (Marguerite Mane) plays an unbelievably innocent and trusting young lady betrothed to the older Dr. Kristan. But, everybody in town is unbelievably naive and trusting - as well as naive and given to superstitious beliefs. The rest of the cast is adequate.

Subject: Seriously creaky
One thinks that a movie like Frankenstein is creaky, and then one sees something like this. Terrible dialogue, stilted acting, poor continuity, and occasionally laughable awkwardness.
And yet it's an interesting story with some unusual features for the horror genre at this time. I enjoyed it, but giggled a lot at the clumsiness.

it never happens in the light.." :-) I like any film in black and white, especially films that are obscure, made a mockery of, and not popular.

This film suffers from
1. a low budget
2. a slow pace
3. some bad acting
4. being quaint and old-fashioned
but despite all of that I was able to get some enjoyment out of it.
The star, Ralph Morgan, was the brother of Frank Morgan, who played the Wizard of Oz.

I started watching this and suddenly remembered that the last time I saw this was on a horror host's show in the 80s. Awesome memories and awesome movie. Very suspenseful.

One of the better independent 30s horror films. The beginning and end are the best parts. It's to bad they didn't do more with Ralph Morgan's transformation scenes. Micha Auer is very good as Morgan's devoted hunchedbacked helper. Enjoyed this one very much.

Subject: Jekyll and Hyde Vampire Movie
This is the story of a good, kind, and respected man who at age 40, through no fault of his own aside from exhaustion due to overwork, becomes a murderous, bloodsucking fiend when in total darkness because his mother was bitten by a vampire bat the day she gave birth to him. I guess that's no more of a stretch than the premise behind The Wolf Man. Professor Kristan commits suicide when he fully realizes he is the monster, while Larry Talbot preferred to anguish over his deeds until killed by his father.
The acting here is mostly good. Maxine Doyle performed poorly in the female lead. The dialog is stilted at times. It's well-paced and maintained my interest all 65 minutes, partly because I wanted to know how Professor Kristan would meet his end. Frank Strayer also directed The Vampire Bat, a better film, but with it's own problems.
I downloaded the DivX file, which is actually an AVI. The video is adequate with compression artifacts often visible. The audio is good.
